- What now? Lawmakers must pass the deal soon to prevent a shutdown. Funding for roughly 20% of the federal government runs out Jan. 19, and the rest on Feb. 2.

- Why it matters: Top Cabinet officials normally disclose their whereabouts and health conditions. Austin, who remains hospitalized, said he "could have done a better job."

| A high-impact storm system is set to slam central and eastern states. | - What to expect: Blizzards could hit parts of the central Plains and Midwest in the coming days, and damaging winds could cause power outages on the Gulf and East coasts.
- This weekend: A storm dumped over a foot of snow in parts of the Northeast. And a damaging tornado hit Florida near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
