Hello Indiana, ​ One single harmonica riff is often credited with the instrument's amazing popularity. It's the start of this classic song. ​ I'm sure you recognise it! Lennon's opening to Love Me Do introduced a generation to the harmonica. ​ Of course, the modern harmonica had been around for a hundred-odd years before that. But John Lennon belting out that riff – just as the popularity of The Beatles and pop music in general was exploding – had a major effect on its popularity. ​ This was helped along by the likes of Bob Dylan, with his famous harp holder! ​ Now, I'm not saying these guys were incredible harpists – they weren't. But kids seeing their musical heroes playing a small, affordable and sweet-sounding instrument was huge. ​ (Maybe something like this started you off on your own harping journey…) ​ The harmonica is now the world's No.1 best-selling musical instrument. ​ But here's the thing. Not many people take it seriously. They buy a harmonica. Maybe get one as a gift. Play around with it a bit. Then discard it into a dusty box. ​ A real shame. But the fact you're reading this tells me you're different Indiana. ​ You DO take your harp playing seriously.
