Not one, but TWO baby orcas were born into the same Southern Resident killer whale pod as the beloved, deceased matriarch Marina. We are just excited as you are, Friend, especially since 69% of orca pregnancies end in miscarriage. The two orca calves are a symbol of hope for a dying population. Now only 75 of these whales remain in the wild.
Unfortunately, we truly cannot celebrate this remarkable moment due to the odds stacked against these precious babies. From climate change and ocean acidification to increased shipping traffic and pollution, we may lose these innocent orca calves before we are given the chance to name them.
Not only are the Pacific waters where these gentle giants call home under attack, but so is their primary food source — Chinook salmon. This fish species once thrived and provided nutrition to orcas and nearby coastal communities, but due to corporate overfishing and bycatch, Chinook salmon are endangered themselves! In result, Southern Resident orca whales are left hungry, weak, and CLINGING to survival.
If the two orca calves are going to make it through their first year, we urgently need to restore their critical food source. That's why we're calling on the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to rein in greedy industrial fishing companies immediately — but we need your help if we're going to apply enough public pressure. Southern Resident killer whale numbers have been declining since 2006 and are currently at their LOWEST point since the 1970's. Increased shipping traffic and commercial fishing are threatening Chinook and other salmon, which were once abundant in their ecosystems. These salmon have dramatically disappeared in the last decade -- leading orcas to starvation, stress, and miscarriages. In fact, experts predict that these beloved sea animals could be EXTINCT within the next few decades.
But let's be blunt: Government environmental agencies like NMFS have FAILED to rein in the greedy commercial fishing industry. And as a result, the powerful corporations responsible for overfishing and bycatch continue to reap MASSIVE profits at the expense of local fisheries and vulnerable orcas who are suffering and clinging to life. Regulating corporate overfishing would bring us one step closer to replenishing the dwindling orca population.
Friend, if we do not act soon, we could lose orcas forever. We must be the voice for these endangered iconic whales before corporate greed wipes them out for good! We have a goal of 2,498 signatures to tell NMFS to STOP corporate overfishing and save this fragile species. Can these two orca calves and the others count on you?
