| There are so many different reasons you might be trying to eat more protein. Managing weight and building muscle strength are two of the big ones! And as you may have discovered, eating more protein is easier said than done. That's where protein shakes come in. As premade formulas, they're a heckuva lot easier to throw together than roasting a chicken or figuring out how to make tofu taste good. | But not all protein shakes are equal. So Annie Hibbs, a registered dietitian at Healthline, stopped by to give us some tips on how to choose the healthiest ones. Find her protein-packed wisdom below. | | | | Shaken, not stirred, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik February 1, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | There are so many different protein shakes out there. What should I look for in a balanced packaged drink? | | A: | There's no shortage in the variety of protein shakes to pick from, making it overwhelming to know which ones to try. Here are some tips for narrowing down the options: - Aim for 20–30 grams of protein per shake. Unless you've been given other recommendations by a healthcare professional, that is. Excess protein can put stress on your kidneys, and your body might start storing it as fat. Remember to recalculate the amount of protein you're consuming if it's different from the recommended serving size on the label.
- Aim for 5 grams of added sugar or less per shake. Some protein shakes are almost like milkshakes with the amount of added sugar they contain. Even though milkshakes can be a delicious treat, you want to avoid eating that much added sugar on a daily basis.
- Determine how many calories is appropriate for your protein shake. Think about how you're planning to use it. Is this a meal replacement or an addition to a meal or a snack? It might help to track your food and beverage intake for a few days to see roughly how many calories you're consuming for meals and snacks to get a better idea of what to aim for with a protein shake. Keep in mind that if you're mixing protein powder with something besides water, you should include those calories in the overall total for that meal or snack.
