Lee Anderson puts self before party | The MP for Ashfield said: "I am going to put my country first, the constituency comes second, and then, the party comes third." But before all those comes ... himself. As I commented when he was kicked out of the parliamentary Conservative party for saying Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, was controlled by "Islamists", his only hope of holding his seat is to fight it as something other than the official Conservative candidate. He can hold it only if he's the focus of a national hoo-ha, and standing against "the establishment", which includes his former party. His defection is hugely damaging to the Tories, as Sean O'Grady points out, but the more damage it does to the government, the better it is for him personally. Asked if he would remain an MP after the election, Anderson replied: "My mailbag tells me I'm going to win." Star Sports bookmaker disagrees with him, quoting odds of 2/1 against him "to win Ashfield seat as a Reform UK candidate", implying that he has a 33 per cent chance. | |
