Restore the whip to Diane Abbott – day two | Angela Rayner, deputy Labour leader, joined the campaign reported by Archie Mitchell in yesterday's newsletter to end Diane Abbott's suspension as a Labour MP. Ed Balls repeated his call to bring her back into the Labour fold on his podcast with George Osborne: "I don't think it's sensible to keep your opponents on the outside just because they are your opponents – and Diane Abbott is a Labour person. She's not Jeremy Corbyn, who showed no contrition at all for what he said about antisemitism, she apologised immediately." I am not sure that it will happen, however surprised Abbott may be about Labour exploiting Frank Hester's attack on her to raise funds for the party. | |

| What else you need to know today | - Angela Rayner made more news as the guest of the parliamentary press gallery at lunch today: she was asked about her tax affairs, but failed to provide any further details that would explain why she hadn't been liable for capital gains tax on the sale of her house
- Keir Starmer gave a speech about Labour and the arts, in which he promised to clamp down on ticket touts; reminding me of the classic Independent editorial of 1987: "In praise of the ticket tout" (scroll down)
- I wrote about Michael Gove's definition of extremism: what is the problem to which it is the solution?

| A look back at the week in Westminster | A feverishly electioneering atmosphere in the Commons | Tomorrow is another private members' bills Friday in the Commons, so we can sum up the short week in parliament. It felt as if an election was imminent. Rumours swirled about a May election, but the reasons for it never made much sense. Even so, the accusations of racism and tainted party funding were at close to election campaign pitch. The Frank Hester story was a nightmare for the prime minister, because he has donated so much money to the Conservatives that it would cause the party serious problems to give it up. On top of the £10m publicly declared so far, accounting for one-fifth of the party's annual income, there are reports today that a further £5m is on the way. | |
| "Extremism is the promotion of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance that aims to negate the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or to undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy"
