The Bost Bulletin Dear Friend, Joe Biden’s speech last week was less a State of the Union than it was a State of Delusion. Biden took a victory lap for an economy the American people have no faith in and celebrated a legislative agenda that’s already failed. He led off his speech asking for more money to secure Ukraine’s border; but he made securing America’s border his 17th priority, soon after Snickers bars and fixing online concert ticket sales. This was Biden’s last big chance to convince the American people he deserved four more years in the White House. Instead, all he offered was divisive political rhetoric, class warfare, and clear proof that he’s completely out of touch with the priorities of Southern Illinois’ working families. Celebrating A Win For Fair Elections In a BIG win for fair elections in America, the U.S. Supreme Court UNANIMOUSLY reversed the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision barring President Trump from the state’s ballot last week. The impact of this decision is far-reaching, as it ends the ridiculous attempt to remove President Trump from the Illinois ballot as well. The highest court in the land has rightly ruled that voters should pick their next president, not a handful of activist judges. Providing an Exciting Update on My Veterans' Second Amendment Legislation As a Marine, the father of a Marine, and the grandfather of a Marine, I take my commitment to our veterans personally. I am honored to serve as the chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, which provides me a critical platform to serve our veterans that no other Member of Congress has. That’s why I’m excited to inform you of my key legislation being signed into law. Congress recently approved a spending package that will be signed into law shortly that includes my legislation to protect veterans from losing their Second Amendment rights without due process. Under current law, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs automatically submits veterans' names for background checks when they need help managing their finances. I believe this violates the constitutional rights of the brave men and women who put on a uniform to protect all of our rights. With my legislation becoming law, this unconstitutional process will end. It simply wasn’t right that these patriotic Americans were having to think twice before reaching out in the first place. No veteran should lose their right to bear arms simply because they asked for help from their government. Our veterans deserved change; and we came together to make that change a reality. Honoring Laken Riley With Action Late last month, Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University in Georgia, was tragically robbed of her life in a “crime of opportunity” by a criminal in the United States illegally. Sadly, her death was an avoidable tragedy. Her murderer was previously charged with theft crimes in New York but was soon let loose. This week I voted for the Laken Riley Act to require that any illegal immigrants charged with crimes like theft be taken into custody. We must make America safer and close the border once and for all.
Supporting Our Firefighters As one of the only former professional firefighters in Congress, it was great meeting with the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois in my office today. I will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our dedicated first responders. Thank you for all you do to keep Southern Illinois safe! Backing Our Men and Women in Blue I was proud to welcome representatives from the Fraternal Order of Police - O’Fallon’s Brian Gimpel, a District 14 trustee, and Robert Nowaczyk, a national trustee – to my office to discuss issues impacting our men and women in blue. They’re facing challenges like they’ve never faced before, and it’s important for them to know Southern Illinoisans will always have their back. To those who keep our communities safe, thank you! Advocating for Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders I met with Lincoln and Nancy Ervin of Effingham today as part of the Tourette Association of America’s National Advocacy Day. We discussed funding for the Tourette Education Program, tele-health coverage, and a slew of other ways we can continue to support families impacted by Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders. Meeting the New Illinois Farm Bureau President Last week I was happy to sit down with the new president of the Illinois Farm Bureau, Brian Duncan. With progress being made on the new five-year Farm Bill, we still have work ahead of us to ensure that the final bill is one that puts our farmers, ranchers, and producers first. I am honored to serve on the House Agriculture Committee, where I am uniquely positioned to be the leading voice for Southern Illinois agriculture. Discussing the Farm Bill with Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association I had a great discussion about the Farm Bill, pesticide regulations, and domestic fertilizer production with the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association last week. With the agriculture industry being one of the biggest employers in Southern Illinois, we’ll continue working together to make sure Southern Illinois priorities are included in the upcoming Farm Bill. Hosting the National Association of Postal Supervisors I held a meeting last week with the National Association of Postal Supervisors. We had a constructive discussion about ways to improve mail delivery in Southern Illinois, which is an issue many of my constituents, friends, and neighbors have reached out to our office about.
