When booking your summer holiday, it's tempting to opt for the old Mediterranean favourites like Greece, Spain and Italy – after all you can't really go wrong with a week or two island hopping in the Aeolian, basking on the beaches of the Iberian Peninsula or wandering through Tuscan vineyards.

But – especially if you're travelling in the school holidays – you may need to be a little more imaginative if you want to find a good deal. Look a little further afield to the likes of Albania, Montenegro or Bulgaria and you'll find prices drop dramatically. Or if you'd rather travel by road or rail, you'll find a whole host of options in France that are easily reached by the Eurostar or in the car.
