| Time for Starmer to give Diane Abbott the whip back? | Sir Keir Starmer's spokesman today mounted his latest defence of the investigation into Diane Abbott's April 2023 suggestion that Jewish people are not subjected to the same racism as some other minorities. The spokesman was grilled by lobby journalists over why - given Ms Abbott's comments and swift subsequent apology have been in the public domain for almost a year - the probe is taking so long. "There are a number of reasons disciplinary cases can take time, it is not appropriate to comment on individual cases," he said. It followed calls from a wide range of Labour figures, including John McDonnell and Harriet Harman, for Ms Abbott to have the whip restored amid the row over Tory Donor Frank Hester's racist alleged remarks about her. Britain's longest-serving black MP has said she does not trust Labour under Sir Keir's leadership to give her a fair hearing. After PMQs, Sir Keir was spotted approaching Ms Abbott to ask if there was any way he could help. "You could restore the whip," she told him. | |

| Tomorrow inside the Westminster bubble | Our political commentator Andrew Grice on what to look out for | Another quiet day in the Commons, starting at 9.30am with questions on the environment, food and rural affairs (Steve Barclay) and to the attorney general (Victoria Prentis). Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the House, will then set out next week's business. Then MPs debate the Estimates, a leftover post-Budget ritual. There will be a short debate in the House of Lords on the regulation of news broadcasting companies, led by Tom McNally, Liberal Democrat. The ballot closes in the Wales Labour leadership election, although the result will not be announced until Saturday. | |
| "Seven months is a long time in politics. Just imagine what would happen if England won the Euros, Team GB had a hat full of gold at the Olympics — the landscape could be very different."
