11-14 MarchWHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) meeting on Immunization for March 2024WHO is holding its biannual SAGE meeting on immunization from 11- 14 March 2024 in Geneva. SAGE will provide recommendations on mpox vaccination to update the WHO interim guidance; on polio with regards to the bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) cessation planning policy framework, and on the use of fractional inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) administered intramuscularly; and on Hepatitis E with regards to the risk-benefit of vaccination of pregnant women in the context of outbreaks occurring in fragile and conflict-affected settings. SAGE will also discuss the latest evidence on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) maternal immunization, on COVID-19 and circulating virus strains and on the immune correlate approach. In addition, SAGE will deliberate the status of the 'Big Catch-up' (an initiative to vaccinate millions of children and restore immunization progress lost during the COVID-19 pandemic) and the monitoring and evaluation of these activities. More information on the March 2024 SAGE meeting is available here. 11-22 March WHO at the 68th Commission on the Status of WomenRecognizing the critical importance of women’s health, gender equality and people’s universal right to health, WHO is participating at the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), which is taking place in New York City in the United States from 11 to 22 March 2024. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The priority theme of the CSW68 is “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.” More info here.
Wednesday, 13 March Gender and the undervaluation of health and care work: Debate and Launch of the WHO Fair Share for Health and Care ReportDuring the sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women WHO will launch a new report “Fair Share for Health and Care: Gender and the Undervaluation of Health and Care Work”. This report illustrates how gender inequalities in health and care work negatively impact women, health systems and health outcomes at large. More info here.
Wednesday, 13 March Launch of new child mortality estimatesEmbargoed until 00:01 GMT / 01:01 CET 13 March 2024 Global and country estimates for child mortality in 2022 will be launched today. The estimates are coordinated by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME). About UN IGME The UN IGME was formed in 2004 to share data on child mortality, improve methods for child mortality estimation, report on progress towards child survival goals and enhance country capacity to produce timely and properly assessed estimates of child mortality. UN IGME is led by UNICEF and includes the World Health Organization, the World Bank Group and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division.
