April 8, 2024 Entry-Level Steps to Begin a Career in Healthcare Want to work in Healthcare but think the school/training will be too long? Check out some of these career pathways to starting a bright future in the healthcare industry. Most assume that high-paying medical jobs with little schooling don't exist or that a career in healthcare requires an impressive degree. This isn't accurate – many well-paid medical field jobs don't require a bachelor's, and a two-year associate degree (or less) can get you started in many medical field careers. Patient Care Technician Patient care technicians are medical professionals who provide daily care for patients. Under the supervision of a registered nurse or nursing team, they assist with taking vital signs, helping to move patients around a clinic, and more. Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) An entry-level role that provides vital support to both patients and nurses. From transporting, bathing, and feeding hospital patients, to stocking medical supplies and logging patient information, CNAs are on the ground working to enhance patient outcomes. While a CNA is not classified as a nurse, this position is a fantastic entry point for dozens of different nursing careers. DNP/LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) The shortest schooling for a medical career is a Diploma in Practical Nursing (DPN). In as little as 12 months, you can become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and be on your way toward becoming a registered nurse (RN).
