Scales can be a great way to learn jazz improv, whether you're just getting started or looking to apply more advanced chord/scale theory concepts.

Scales are really hard to turn into music. I mean, just take a look at what a scale looks like:

Scales are linear patterns with stable intervallic formulas that ascend or descend. 

In other words, they aren't very melodic, and great melody is essential for producing pro sounding jazz solos.

The other problem is since you learn a scale at face-value (a linear pattern), it can be hard to break free from that pattern and figure out how to use those notes to create great melodies.
