GROWING GOOD DADS

Creating a Value-Based Environment for Your Child by Setting Goals

For many parents, decisions are reaction-based. But how do you go about passing down good behaviors and values to your child when you aren't perfect yourself?

Cody Dodd, who's a husband, father, part-time dad-blogger, and full-time Navy Sailor, shares an exercise he learned in a couple's counseling class.

"Create a pros and cons list. Include whatever comes to your mind for each when thinking about your childhood experience. When I did this, my cons list flowed easily. The pros, not so much. But as I looked at my habits today and what comes easy for me, the pros started to reveal themselves."

Rules for Children

Learning Life Lessons and Setting Realistic Expectations

Join us this week for a blast from the past with Good Dads! As we dive into our June theme about raising children between the ages of 6 and 9, learning lessons you might not always hear in school is important.

Dr. Baker shares advice gleaned from Dumbing Down our Kids by Charles Sykes, including the fact that life is not always fair.

"I think sometimes parents try too hard to make things fair for their kids and forget that sometimes dealing with a little adversity can make your kids stronger."

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS

On Monday, June 3rd, Callaway County Sheriff's Office hosted a community development meeting! Fulton community leaders and residents alike learned about Good Dads' services, outcomes, and goals, as well as reasons why they might become a Community Chapter.

A special thanks goes out to Serve Inc.'s Stephanie Rademan and to pastor Paul Klepees for their work in organizing and coordinating this meeting. Stephanie Rademan also already indicated Serve Inc. and other community leaders want to get Good Dads programs started in their area as soon as possible, so interest is very strong in this community!

Nearby in Moberly, Randolph County Caring Community hosted a community development meeting the next day! Randolph County leaders listened to the same presentation given to the Fulton folks, and attendees asked lots of good questions.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, GOOD DADS!

Good Dads and our favorite video production company, Harp Creative, journeyed to Columbia this week to shoot something very special at our COMO chapter headquarters. We're excited to tease two new video projects underway! Keep your eyes and ears open for more info coming your way very soon.

TRIVIA

Last week's trivia question asked subscribers to guess which was NOT something kids learn by approximately age 5. Here's how our subscribers responded:

  • Recognize simple rhymes (10%)
  • Take turns while playing games (0%)
  • Hop on one foot (10%)
  • Tell the difference between left and right (20%)
  • Imaginative play/playing pretend (60%)

The answer is knowing the difference between left and right! Most children do not learn this skill until age 6-7 (but it's important to remember that every child is unique and learns things at a different pace).
