Democrats are panicking after President Biden's debate performance.

What happened? Biden had a rough night — he struggled with an uneven delivery and raspy voice. Donald Trump hit back with falsehoods. CNN moderators didn't fact-check, but we did here.
The fallout: Democrats expressed disbelief on social media and in private text messages. Some called on Biden to step aside for a younger candidate. The next debate is set for Sept. 10.

The Supreme Court blocked a controversial Purdue Pharma opioid settlement.

Why? It would have shielded the family that owns Purdue, the maker of OxyContin, from future lawsuits. That is not allowed, justices ruled yesterday.
Why it matters: The plan would have provided billions to help address the U.S. opioid crisis, which claims around 100,000 lives each year.
Also yesterday: Justices allowed emergency abortions to resume in Idaho and blocked a major air-quality rule. More decisions will come today.

Oklahoma schools are now required to teach the Bible.

Why? The state superintendent announced the policy yesterday for fifth through 12th grades, effective immediately. He said it would give children "historical understanding."
Zooming out: Critics say the move blurs the boundary between church and state. It comes after Louisiana required the Ten Commandments be displayed in classrooms.

The former Uvalde, Tex., school police chief was indicted yesterday.

Who is he? Pete Arredondo. He faced much of the blame for the botched response to the 2022 shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead at Robb Elementary.
The latest: Arredondo was booked on 10 counts of abandoning or endangering a child. He and one other officer are the first to face criminal charges in the shooting.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny James in the NBA draft yesterday.

His story: James, 19, suffered a cardiac arrest during a July 2023 practice at USC. His second-round selection completed his comeback, and means he may play with his dad, LeBron.
Other sports news: The NFL was ordered to pay $5 billion in a lawsuit over its Sunday Ticket broadcast package. It could reshape how fans watch the country's most popular sport.

The data: 65% of people between the ages of 14 and 24 consider themselves video creators, a survey from YouTube found. Many are posting their own reaction and commentary videos.
It's a big shift: Tech industry insiders used to say that only 1 in 10 of an online community's users post new content — the rest were just lurking.

The U.S. has two new giant pandas.

Meet the fluffballs: Yun Chuan and Xin Bao flew from China to California yesterday. They're the first pair of pandas to arrive in the U.S. in more than two decades.
Their new home: San Diego Zoo. They'll take a few weeks to settle in before the public can see them. Pandas are also returning to D.C.'s National Zoo later this year.
