For the first time since the general election campaign started, the state of UK politics ceased to be the centre of attention, at least for a moment – making way for Joe Biden's disastrous performance in the first US presidential debate. The current president struggled to answer basic questions and lost his train of thought in a showdown with Donald Trump that has left the Democratic party wondering if they've left it too late to replace him. As Jon Sopel writes in The Independent, Biden's performance was "beyond awful" and all attention will now be on whether he decides to step aside for a younger candidate.
Back at home, the final countdown is on to election day.
The picture has not got any better for the Tories in terms of polling numbers and the ongoing betting scandal has clearly not helped. However, the headlines for Nigel Farage have also been all bad after a Reform activist was recorded using racist language about the prime minister. Mr Sunak issued a highly unusual statement on Friday saying that he was "hurt and angry" at the slur used against him.
