Vice President Harris held her first campaign rally in Milwaukee. Yesterday: Groups supporting Harris announced a record fundraising haul, and polling showed a tight race with Donald Trump. She is mulling her VP pick — here are some options. Tonight: President Biden, who returned to D.C. yesterday, will deliver a speech about why he ended his reelection bid. Read this story         Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned yesterday. Why? She was under pressure following the agency's failure to prevent the assassination attempt against Trump. She faced tough questioning before Congress on Monday. More fallout: Secret Service officials have encouraged Trump's campaign to stop scheduling large outdoor events. Trump's team is scouting indoor venues for future rallies. Read this story         Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address Congress today. It could be tense: Dozens of Democrats plan to skip the speech. And more protests over Israel's war in Gaza are expected after about 200 people were arrested on Capitol Hill yesterday. Later this week: Netanyahu is expected to meet with Biden, Harris and Trump. Other news from Congress: Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said he will resign from the Senate next month. He was convicted last week on federal bribery and other charges. Read this story           The Biden administration launched an investigation into Delta Air Lines. Why? The carrier has been slow to recover from last week's global IT outages. It has canceled more than 5,000 flights since Friday, even as its competitors recovered quickly. The scale: Delta's missteps affected about 500,000 people, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said yesterday. That includes unaccompanied children who've been stranded. Read this story         Carbon credit traders are cashing in on protected Amazon forest in Brazil. What are carbon credits? They're bought by companies to offset carbon emissions. The money funds projects that, for example, protect forests or generate renewable energy. The issue: Programs have been set up in the Amazon to generate carbon credits. But many profit from public lands that the projects have no legal right to, a Post investigation found. Other climate news: Sunday was the hottest day ever recorded on Earth, scientists said. It followed 13 straight months of unprecedented temperatures. Read this story         ADVERTISEMENT     A huge hydrothermal eruption in Yellowstone sent tourists fleeing. Yesterday: An explosion of hot water and rocks in Wyoming shocked visitors and forced the temporary closure of an area of the national park. No one was injured. What caused it? These eruptions happen when hot water creates bubbles of steam, leading to underground pressure. Eventually, it bursts through the surface. Read this story         Scientists found "dark oxygen" being produced on the seafloor. These masses — called polymetallic nodules — appear to extract oxygen from water. (Rov Kiel 6000, Geomar) The discovery: Masses made of naturally occurring metals can produce oxygen — even in complete darkness, 13,000 feet below the ocean surface, a new study found. Why it's significant: Organisms normally need light to produce oxygen. This newly discovered process could rewrite our understanding of how life started on Earth.
