The Bost Bulletin

Dear Friend,

Congress is gearing up for a critical month in Washington, D.C. With the September 30th deadline to fund the government fast approaching, my colleagues and I are working tirelessly to ensure we avoid a shutdown of essential services while advancing conservative, common sense spending policies. Either way, kicking the can down the road isn’t a solution. We need to restore fiscal sanity in Washington and fight back against Big Government mandates that hurt hardworking Americans. I’ll keep you posted on developments once I’m back on the Hill next week, but for now, here’s the wrap up on a busy summer district work period.

Meeting with Monroe County Officials

I met with Monroe County Elected Officials and Department Directors in Waterloo. We went over updates on local projects in the area, ways my office can continue to assist in their development, and had some exciting discussions about projected population and business growth in the region in the coming years.

Attending the Effingham County Regional Airport Groundbreaking Ceremony

I joined officials at the Effingham County Regional Airport for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Runway 11-29 and Taxiway A extensions. It was great to see members of the Airport Commission; representatives from Hanson Professional Services; officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Illinois Division of Aeronautics; and, of course, the community members who make Southern Illinois such a special place. This project is about more than just adding pavement - it's about laying the foundation for future economic growth. It will enhance the airport's capacity to handle larger aircraft and help attract new businesses, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on Effingham County’s economy.

Working with the Wounded Warrior Project

I met with Marisa Schultz from the Wounded Warrior Project in my Effingham office last week. We discussed important issues impacting our veterans, including the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act. As chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve been fighting for this crucial legislation that expands economic opportunities for veterans, modernizes VA services, and ensures our heroes receive the care they deserve. I’m committed to working alongside organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project to continue improving the lives of our veterans and their families.

Talking Economy in Jasper County

I participated in a productive meeting with elected officials in Jasper County where we covered a lot of ground on issues impacting residents and the local economy. It’s always great to collaborate with dedicated leaders who are committed to making a positive impact in their communities. I’m looking forward to continuing our work together to support Jasper County and all of Southern Illinois.

Discussing Infrastructure in Masaac County

Last week I met with Marion Mayor Mike Absher to discuss local projects and ways our office can stay connected as we work together on development programs. After our meeting, he took me on a tour of small businesses in the area, where it was a joy meeting the people that act as the backbone for our economy here in Southern Illinois.

Getting an Update on the Cypress Creek Refuge

I met with Friends of the Cache today to discuss the ongoing staffing shortages at the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge. Starting October 1, management will shift to Crab Orchard, with maintenance crews dispatched as needed. I’m committed to doing all I can to ensure our district's natural resources are protected and maintained for future generations to enjoy.

Addressing Alexander County's Critical Issues

I met with Alexander County officials to discuss important concerns facing the community and reviewed the need for improvements to federal programs that provide surplus property for emergency services. We also celebrated the start of Cairo’s first new home construction in 50 years, a promising step for affordable housing in a city that has been through a lot of challenges.

Supporting Infrastructure in Anna

I had a meeting with Mayor Steve Hartline and other officials in Anna last week to discuss their critical sewage system improvement project, which our office submitted for community project funding. This $1.8 million project aims to rehabilitate the city’s outdated manhole structures, which have caused raw sewage backups during heavy rainfall. These much-needed upgrades will improve public health and safety, ensuring reliable wastewater services for over 4,000 residents.

Marking 50 Years of the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam

I had the honor of speaking at the 50th anniversary of the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam during the LKSI Barge Trip. This vital infrastructure has been a cornerstone for Southern Illinois and the entire Mississippi River system, ensuring goods move efficiently for the past half-century. We’ve made significant upgrades in recent years, including new power systems, structural repairs, and critical flood-prevention measures. With over $20 million in upcoming improvements, we’re preparing the lock for the next generation of commerce and flood management.

Thanking Jefferson County Treasurer Bob Watt for his Volunteerism

And last, but not least, I had the pleasure of visiting with Jefferson County Treasurer Bob Watt at his home in Mt. Vernon. Bob’s dedication to raising funds for the American Cancer Society by biking 300 miles in August is truly inspiring. With a personal connection to the cause, he’s made a significant impact for those who need help. I want to congratulate Bob and thank him for his volunteerism and commitment to making a difference. It’s efforts like his that make Southern Illinois such a special place.
