| Hello and welcome to a special newsletter from The Independent introducing our first Climate 100 list. The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time, and addressing it should be a top priority for every nation. As Greta Thunberg aptly describes, it is an existential emergency. Last year was the hottest on record, with the UK reaching 34.8C. Europe has been ravaged by wildfires, hurricanes are becoming more frequent and unpredictable, and crops are being devastated by floods and droughts, pushing ecosystems to the brink of collapse. Beyond the visible and alarming impacts, there are hidden but significant consequences, such as the widening gap between rich and poor nations. Entire cultures could be wiped out as land disappears, and entire populations face the threat of displacement. We are approaching tipping points where the damage caused by human-driven climate change will become irreversible. | The list includes changemaking activists, scientists, academics, philanthropists, political leaders, business and tech leaders, and fashion entrepreneurs (Independent) | However, there is hope, in the form of innovators around the globe, pushing to have their voices heard and protecting the environment for the next generation, while paving the way for a better, cleaner and greener future. That's why The Independent has launched its inaugural Climate 100 List, which includes changemaking activists, scientists, academics, philanthropists, political leaders, business and tech leaders, and fashion entrepreneurs. Click here to meet the exceptional people solving the planet's greatest challenges. We'll also be celebrating those on the list with our first Climate 100 event, which takes place tomorrow from 7pm BST/1pm EST. Attendees will hear from Theresa May, among other inspiring speakers. | Livia Giuggioli Firth's environmental work spans many areas. She launched the Green Carpet Challenge, which champions wearing sustainable, ethical pieces on the red carpet, and has made documentaries about the secretive underbelly of the fashion's industry's sweatshops. She also co-founded Eco-Age, a company that helped businesses adopt regenerative models and she is a member of the UN Women's Europe and Central Asia Regional Civil Society Advisory Group. Despite her long list of achievements, she identifies primarily as an activist. But the moment that "changed everything" for her was in 2008 when she travelled to Bangladesh for the first time with journalist and environmentalist, Lucy Siegel, and The Circle, a charity that she co-founded with singer and activist Annie Lennox and other women. "We got smuggled into a factory that was producing garments for a French supermarket brand, and what I saw completely shocked me." | | | At The Independent, we know our readers care deeply about the planet.
