Dear Reader, As Election Day looms, Harris and Trump have been delivering their closing arguments to Americans. Trump is focused on rooting out "the enemy within", with performing mass deportations, and with revenge — including "televised military tribunals" — for those who wronged him. Harris delivered a speech at the Ellipse in Washington DC — in almost the exact same place as Trump incited rioters just before they stormed the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 — that called for unity and talked about giving her detractors a seat at the table. It echoed a slogan her campaign has been touting for a while: "We're not going back." Nevertheless, we may go back — back to a hostile environment for journalists, back to a time when Trump threatened to end visas for foreign reporters, back when media representatives were attacked at Trump events. The 45th president referred to the media as "the enemy of the people" at a recent rally. He has consistently promised that he will jail journalists who protect their sources and try his hardest to put media organizations that disagree with his policies out of business. In this environment, it's more important than ever to fund independent newsgathering. The Independent doesn't give either candidate a pass. We dig into financial reports, we travel to the swing states, and we demand answers from the White House — whoever's behind that big desk in the Oval Office. When you subscribe, you fund these reporting trips and investigative missions. And we make sure that you have access to all of our latest findings from our extensive global teams — from London to New York to Washington DC to Los Angeles to New Delhi. | |
