WHO will join partners in commemorating the day and promoting efforts to prevent the harmful practice. A webinar titled STEPPING UP THE PACE. Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM will be held at 14.00 CET on 6 February (register here). Normally carried out on young girls, FGM includes all procedures that involve removing or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It can have life-threatening consequences like infections or heavy bleeding, and cause lifelong complications for survivors, from mental health conditions to sexual disorders and difficulties during childbirth. New guidelines on the prevention of FGM and care for survivors will be released later this year.
