MCHR Defends Human Dignity for Missourians

August 1, 2025 – Missouri has a longstanding history of defending human dignity. Over a century ago, on February 12, 1918, the Missouri General Assembly created the Missouri Negro Industrial Commission, the nation's first such body, to focus on discrimination Black residents experienced in areas such as education and employment. On June 8, 1957, the legislature affirmed its dedication to protecting human dignity by forming the Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR) under the Missouri Human Rights Act, Chapter 213 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. For nearly 70 years, MCHR's mission has been to encourage fair treatment of groups and individuals protected by the law, to discourage discrimination against them, and to foster mutual understanding and respect. MCHR handles complaints of discrimination in housing, employment, and places of public accommodation concerning not only race and color, but also sex, disability, religion, national origin, ancestry, age in employment, familial status in housing, along with retaliation and association in employment and places of public accommodation.

As the official adjudicators of Missouri's law prohibiting discrimination on these protected categories, MCHR continues our state's history by upholding dignity and respect.  MCHR vigorously supports equal opportunity through education and outreach to ensure a broad understanding of the rights and responsibilities under the law. Through innovative technology and teamwork, MCHR is committed to continuously improving customer service to the public. The Missouri Commission on Human Rights reaffirms its dedication to the rule of law — the foundation of our justice system, essential for preserving legal rights.

MCHR is an independent commission housed within the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. The governor appoints our eleven dedicated members from each congressional district across the state. If you are interested in serving on the commission to support human rights in your district and throughout the state, please visit boards.mo.gov. For information about the complaint process or to schedule a training for your group on rights and responsibilities under the Missouri Human Rights Act, visit labor.mo.gov/discrimination.
