 | Congress returns today with little time to dodge a government shutdown. | - The deadline: Lawmakers have about four weeks to fund the government. Republican leaders will need support from Democrats, but many are in no mood to cooperate.
- Another looming fight: Lawmakers will continue efforts to force the release of files related to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The issue has caused a rift among Republicans.

 | Students in some states will have mandatory gun safety training this year. | - In Tennessee: All students in public and charter schools will be required to take firearm safety lessons. The state's 5-year-olds will learn to identify a trigger, a barrel and a muzzle.
- Why? It's an unprecedented approach to curbing injuries from guns, the nation's leading cause of death in children and adolescents. Arkansas and Utah have passed similar laws.

 | Cement manufacturers want to go green, but Trump is blocking them. | - What to know: The government has canceled grants to cut carbon dioxide emissions from cement manufacturing, hitting some Republican communities with plants hard.
- Why it matters: The moves threaten the U.S. role in the global race to create lower-carbon cement. Cement creates as much as 8% of the planet's greenhouse gas.
