Can collagen really turn back the aging clock by 8 years?

Probably not, but it is important.

In a Nutshell
A buzzy new study claims a specific collagen formula can reduce your biological age by over a year in just 6 months, with some participants appearing to reverse aging by more than a decade! But before you stock up, there's more to this story than the headlines suggest.

what's got us buzzing
The collagen formula that promises to reverse aging
This new study makes extraordinary claims: a combination of the amino acids glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline in a 3:1:1 ratio reduced biological age by an average of 1.4 years after 6 months, with some participants showing a reversal of 8 to 13 years.
The formula also extended life span in roundworms, improved grip strength in elderly mice, and delivered measurable improvements in skin texture, hydration, and elasticity in humans within 3 months. On the face of it, pretty impressive, but there are a couple of things to consider.
First, the study's investigators are co-founders of Avea Life AG, the company that makes the tested "Collagen Activator" and funded the trial. Plus, there was no placebo control, as all 66 human participants were aware that they were taking the supplement. The most dramatic age reversals occurred in individuals whose biological age was already higher than their chronological age.
The formula also contained alpha-ketoglutarate, astaxanthin, and vitamin C alongside the amino acids, so we can't be sure which components did what.
What the evidence actually shows
The broader research on collagen supplementation is more modest but still positive.
  • A 2019 review found that 2.5 to 10 grams daily for up to 6 months improved skin hydration, elasticity, and collagen content in older adults.
  • A 2023 meta-analysis confirmed positive effects on skin hydration and elasticity, though most studies were small and industry-funded.
  • 2025 research found that collagen peptides helped to reduce symptoms of joint pain in people living with knee osteoarthritis.
However, there is stronger evidence supporting topical retinoids for skin aging. Prescription tretinoin and over-the-counter retinoids have decades of research supporting their ability to boost collagen production.
If you're considering collagen supplements, expect modest improvements in skin hydration and possibly joint comfort — not age reversal. Some other things to consider:
  • Choose hydrolyzed collagen peptides.
  • For skin health take 2.5 to 10 g daily for 8 to 24 weeks.
  • For joint pain, take 5 to 20 g for 3 to 9 months.
  • Budget $25 to $50 per month for the cost of supplements.
  • The specific 3:1:1 ratio isn't necessary — standard hydrolyzed collagen has shown benefits in numerous studies.
The bottom line
Focus on protecting the collagen you have:
  • Wear sunscreen daily.
  • Avoid smoking, or speak with a healthcare professional about smoking cessation.
  • Limit alcohol and added sugar.
  • Eat adequate protein with vitamin C-rich foods.
  • Exercise regularly, if possible.
These strategies are cost-effective, backed by overwhelming evidence, and address root causes rather than merely trying to work around them.
