THE 101: The first homicide of 2026 in Des Moines came just over 2 hours into the New Year. Police say a dispute around 2:30 a.m. Thursday at an apartment in the 300 block of Court Avenue led one man to shoot and kill another.

WHAT WE KNOW: Des Moines police on Thursday morning arrested 31-year-old Jordan Isaac Carmi, who lives at the Court Avenue apartment. He's charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 30-year-old Tony Young.

"Evidence discovered during the investigation indicates that during a dispute at the residence ... Carmi used a handgun to shoot the victim," according to a news release. "Detectives did recover a handgun, believed to be connected to this investigation, from Walnut Creek near the North Valley Drive bridge."

IOWA WEATHER

Temperatures will not be moving very much and are expected to stay in the 20s for highs over most of the state. Areas closer to the southern and southwestern boarder will have highs in the mid and low 30s. The clouds, which are to blame for the weak warm up, will also give a chance for some light precipitation over parts of the state.

A chance for some light drizzle/light snowfall will mainly stay over southwestern Iowa this evening and overnight. This could lead to some patchy slick spots for any travel. Deeper into the state will stay mainly clear of that, with only a slight chance for some flurries to light snow.

We see temps start to climb this weekend, with next week even warmer with several days in the 50s.
