TOP STORY: Trump visits Iowa trying to focus on affordability during fallout over nurse's Minneapolis shooting

THE 101: President Donald Trump is coming to Iowa today as part of the White House's midterm year pivot toward affordability, even as his administration remains mired in the fallout in Minneapolis over a second fatal shooting by federal immigration officers this month.

While in Iowa, the Republican president will make a stop at a local business before delivering a speech on affordability, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. Trump's expected to highlight energy policy and rally support for U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn, Iowa's 3rd Congressional District incumbent who's in a competitive race for reelection.

WHAT TO KNOW: Doors open at noon at Horizon Events Center, located at 2100 NW 100th Street in Clive, and the event is expected to start around 3 p.m.

Clive police are emphasizing safety and respect for both attendees and protesters planning to gather near the event. Northwest 100th Street will be closed from Swanson Boulevard to Hickman Road beginning around noon and reopening at 5 p.m. Police say the closure will create what the city is calling a "Free Speech Zone," where protesters can gather safely away from traffic.

We are still in the middle of the cold snap this morning, but the worst of the cold weather is behind us for now. Winds will pick up through the day, setting up for a breezy afternoon with a high that may not reach 20 degrees in Des Moines. Wind chills will remain in the single digits above zero at the warmest.

Good news: temperatures will begin to warm into the weekend with 30s expected by Sunday afternoon. More 30s into next week with a possible cloudy stretch accompanying the warm up.
