The SAVE Act was concocted around right-wing lies about voter fraud — it would require all voters to prove they're citizens just to register to vote, while also eliminating voting by mail. Experts have issued grave warnings that millions of people would suddenly have to jump through major hoops just to avoid being disenfranchised. It's a long list of people affected, from those who've lost documents in floods or house fires to married women who've changed their last names (70% of them!).

Just the idea that you have to show your papers to cast your ballot is deeply un-American and anti-democratic. But Republicans have decided that they can't win elections if they don't stop certain people from voting. That's why they're desperate to manipulate maps before the midterms. It's why they're threatening to deploy ICE and the military to polling locations.

And it's why they're currently trying to ram through the SAVE Act.
