TOP STORY: Northern Iowa clinches NCAA bid; Iowa, ISU enter conference tournaments this week |
|
|
THE 101: The madness has already started. Northern Iowa has earned its first NCAA Tournament bid in a decade after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis, topping UIC 84-69 to clinch an automatic berth. Meanwhile, Iowa and Iowa State enter the Big Ten and Big 12 tournaments this week with chances to improve their stock heading into next Sunday's selection show. WHY IT MATTERS: Northern Iowa became the first team in Missouri Valley Conference Tournament history to win the title by winning four games in four days. UNI entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, won its opener against No. 11 Evansville, then upset the No. 3 and No. 2 seed in back-to-back days to set up Sunday's clash with No. 5 UIC. Drake did the Panthers a favor by eliminating No. 1 seed Belmont in the quarterfinals. MAIN TAKEAWAYS: |
|
|
- UNI's last NCAA Tournament trip in 2016 will live in March Madness lore forever. The Panthers won their first game of the tournament on a buzzer-beater from beyond halfcourt to beat Texas, then followed it up with an all-time collapse to lose to Texas A&M in the final seconds in the round of 32.
- Iowa enters the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 9 seed and will play Wednesday against the winner of No. 16 Oregon vs. No. 17 Maryland.
- No. 5 seed Iowa State will play Wednesday against the winner of No. 12 Arizona State and No. 13 Baylor.

Another spring-like day in store to start the week with potential record warmth for the Des Moines metro. A cold front will bring cooler conditions by mid-week along with at least spotty rain and storm chances. Very mild and still a bit breezy early this morning with temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s across the state. Temperatures should dip into the upper 40s for most areas before sunrise, but then another very quick warm up is on the way today. The south winds won't be quite as strong for most, generally 10 to 15 mph as opposed to the 30mph gusts that we saw yesterday. However, that south breeze and ample sunshine will be enough to warm temperatures back into the 60s by the lunch hour, with highs today approaching the 70s.
In fact, we could be near the record high here in Des Moines. The current record, last hit in 2021, currently stands at 72 degrees and there is a very good chance that make it to 71 or 72 degrees here in the metro, potentially tying the record high. Most of southern Iowa, mainly near and south of I-80, should see highs in the low to mid-70s today. North of I-80, it will be slightly cooler, though highs should still reach the middle to upper 60s for most of the state.
A cold front will sink south across the state overnight, dropping lows into the 30s to the north, while temperatures stay in the mid-40s south of I-80. That front will lead to a wide difference in temperatures across Iowa for Tuesday afternoon. South of I-80, it will be another spring-like day with highs in the 60s to mid-70s. North of I-80, expect cooler conditions with highs in the 50s and potentially upper 40s near the Minnesota border. DAY BY DAY: |
- Today: Sunny. Near record high temperatures. High 72F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph.
- Tuesday: A mix of clouds and sun early, then becoming cloudy later in the day. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. High 66F. Winds NE at 10 to 15 mph.
- Wednesday: Cloudy early then partly cloudy and windy later in the day. High 50F. Winds NNW at 20 to 30 mph.
- Thursday: Mostly cloudy and becoming windy. High 59F. Winds SSW at 20 to 30 mph.
- Friday: Partly to mostly cloudy. High 50F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.
