So close, so intriguing, so welcoming | Simplicity can bring out the best of travel. When uncertainty abounds around the world, one always-reliable travel option remains: taking a ship or a flight across the Irish Sea. The cities of Ireland have been transformed, with their rich historical fabric embellished with outstanding places to stay, eat and shop. The countryside – a patchwork from meadows to mountains – presents a beautiful backdrop. And the coastline is one of the most spectacular in the world. Add an always-warm welcome, and this happy place is complete. | |
| The Wild Atlantic Way is a brilliant concept: over 1,600 miles of scenic roads and trails that wrap around the nation's west coast. The route binds together breathtaking locations along the shore where the ocean reaches Europe – with rich heritage, attractions and activities to enliven the experience. Add on a side trip to Achill Island and you may feel you've reached the edge of the world. | | | | | Tuesday is St Patrick's Day, and so Irish pubs, cafes and culture clubs across the country will be preparing for their liveliest day of the year. If you're in London, Travel Correspondent Simon Calder has prepared the ultimate guide to celebrating the saint's day in the capital. He highlights places such as McCarthy's Bar in Tooting as a place to head to for a proper Irish breakfast. Or if you'd rather celebrate with a pint of the black stuff, this could be the weekend to explore the new Guinness brewery in Covent Garden. It's on the island of Ireland, though, that the party is at its most spectacular. Cork will be transformed by American marching bands and international dancers, who will samba their way through the town during the next week. Over in Waterford, a huge programme of events includes 30 live acts, heritage tours and the spectacular Paschal Fire Show. And in Northern Ireland, the Saint Patrick Centre is expecting some 15,000 visitors to line the streets for the saint's day parade, taking place on its 25th anniversary. |

| | Perhaps it's too late for you to take a trip for St Patrick's day itself. Our advice is to plan a visit for later in the year instead. If you're travelling with family, writer David Young discovered that County Kerry is the ideal place for a getaway with children. He explored the spectacular Tralee to Fenit greenway, which is, he said, is enclosed, smooth and safe: "welcome features when you have three children who specialise in heading in three different directions at the same time." Juliet Kinsman found that West Cork was the perfect place to reconnect with her teenage daughter. "The acceleration of technology has meddled with the healthy development of mine and many other children's neural pathways, and I'm a firm believer that time spent in nature is one of the most effective antidotes," she writes. And so she visited Ballydehob, where bunting fluttered between stone cottages and strangers told her folk tales in traditional inns. Even if your St Patrick's Day celebrations don't include visiting the Emerald Isle, I think this is the year to take a visit: for unbeatable fresh air, extraordinary landscapes and plenty of Guinness. |
