Campaign technology companies now offer chatbots trained to communicate in a candidate’s style. When voters respond to campaign text messages, an AI system can answer questions, discuss subjects such as taxes or education and simultaneously collect information about what matters to the voter. Though this type of technology is new, recent surveys indicate that voters, especially younger ones, may be comfortable letting chatbot responses influence who they vote for. |
One of the most important developments is AI-powered voter targeting. Republican strategists have aggressively adopted programs capable of creating simulated populations of voters. From those simulations, political operatives then predict how different groups might react to candidates, advertisements or breaking events. |
A controversial development involves AI-generated political advertising and deepfakes. In the Texas Senate campaign, for example, the National Republican Senatorial Committee produced an AI-generated video that appeared to show Democratic candidate James Talarico speaking on camera even though he had never recorded the footage. Other races have featured fictional AI images and videos placing candidates in embarrassing or absurd situations that never actually took place. |
The unpopularity of data centers has also made AI a political issue, with many candidates voicing their opposition to data centers as a way to win votes of people who do not want such centers built in their communities. |
How it Affects You |
Increasingly realistic AI-generated media can make it more difficult for voters to distinguish satire, exaggeration and outright fabrication from genuine recordings. Federal election law generally requires political advertising to disclose who paid for it, but there is still no comprehensive nationwide requirement that every AI-generated political image or video be clearly identified as artificial. |
AI is no longer simply helping campaigns write speeches or produce graphics. It can now identify persuadable voters, test thousands of messages, communicate personally with enormous numbers of people and manufacture convincing political imagery at very low cost. The result may be the beginning of a new era in American elections, one in which understanding whether a political message was created by a candidate, a campaign worker or an artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important responsibility for voters. |
