More than 16,000 people have been arrested in Washington, D.C., since the Trump administration launched the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force last year. Created through a March 2025 executive order, the operation brought federal and local agencies together in what the U.S. Marshals Service has deemed the largest law enforcement collaboration ever assembled to combat crime in a major American city. |
The arrests include more than 3,200 people accused of narcotics offenses, over 100 known gang members, and 35 homicide suspects. Authorities have also seized nearly 2,000 illegal firearms and located 25 missing children. Crime statistics have moved sharply downward during the operation, with homicides falling 41% during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year. |
Meanwhile, motor vehicle theft dropped 54%. Robbery, carjacking, sexual assault, and larceny also declined. The National Guard deployment supporting the operation is currently scheduled to remain in Washington through January 2029. |

The operation could become a blueprint for similar federal interventions elsewhere. Washington, D.C. is a unique case because the federal government has far greater authority in the capital than it does in most American cities, but a sustained reduction in crime could still encourage the administration to pursue deeper partnerships with state and local agencies in other high-crime areas. |
However, an extended deployment would come with a costly price tag and continued questions about the federal government’s role in local policing. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that a National Guard presence of 2,950 troops could cost about $55 million per month, while more than 5,000 were assigned to Washington as of July. |
With the deployment set to remain through January 2029, the high cost is sure to be at the forefront of the debate regarding how much federal involvement is necessary to sustain the city’s gains in public safety. |
