A U.S. Postal Service inspector general audit found that several facilities failed to consistently follow election-mail procedures during the 2026 primary season. Auditors examined nine processing centers and 73 delivery units across eight states. USPS processed election and political mail on time at rates between 97.75% and 98.99%. However, auditors identified problems with ballot postmarks, late-mail reporting, employee training, and certifications intended to confirm that facilities had cleared all election mail scheduled for delivery. Roughly 12% of facilities did not understand proper postmarking rules, while 56% had hand stamps displaying incorrect dates. At a Pennsylvania facility, at least 56 ballots received the wrong postmark. Auditors also found unsecured stamps and one displaying the impossible date of April 43rd. Among approximately 1.27 million pieces reviewed, 214 were delayed, including 115 ballots. Workers recovered 110 ballots before election deadlines, but five arrived too late. The inspector general issued 11 recommendations covering training, equipment security, and policy enforcement. USPS accepted 10, saying its ballot-mail performance remained strong. While human errors will undoubtedly happen, for sensitive mail like ballots, the utmost care must be applied. The system, and people’s faith in it, will be reliable only when those safeguards work at every facility, not merely on paper. How It Affects You For those planning to mail their ballots in, do so early enough to leave time for any problems to be corrected. A postmark error or processing delay may matter in states that judge eligibility by the mailing date. The audit identifies failures voters can neither prevent nor detect. A ballot deposited on time can still receive the wrong postmark, sit unprocessed, or miss a delivery deadline because employees did not follow procedure. Voters should not lose their say because USPS used an incorrect date stamp or failed to clear election mail from a facility. Keep any confirmation showing when your ballot was requested, mailed, or accepted. That record may help officials locate it or explain what happened if its status is questioned.
