  Inside: This Week in Autos
Like a nation of spelunkers, everyone these days seems to be looking for the bottom. Whether it's the real estate, financial or automotive sector, perennial optimists keep hoping that we are almost there because they don't see how it could get any worse. But month after month the hoped-for bottom remains elusive and the news just keeps being bad. This week was no exception when the auto industry reported historically low sales in August. While few were surprised that Detroit continued to fall what was surprising was that even Toyota once again saw sales sink year-over-year. Only Nissan reported a sales pop. Elsewhere this week we looked at a Ford Fiesta that gets 65 mpg but which you can't buy in the States and, while innovations like fuel cell and hydrogen-powered cars are years away from production, looked at the fuel-saving techniques automakers are using now to help drivers save fuel now. Speaking of saving fuel, we also reviewed the 2009 Honda Fit subcompact and found it better—and bigger—than ever.

"If Google or anyone can offer amazing Web apps, then cloud computing should take off. Until then, the desktop (Microsoft) is still king."

Honda's name for its new Prius killer is perhaps the least innovative thing about it-it's going to be called the Insight. The old Insight was the first mass-produced hybrid sold in the U.S. in 1990 but was phased out amid weak sales in 2006. closequote
