AltoRex Rooftop Lounge
at Hotel Palomar: 866 West Peachtree Street NW, Midtown;
678.412.2402
You don't have to mimic dad's accomplishments to honor him:
despite some early misunderstandings, Derek Zoolander
ultimately did his coal-mining pops proud by becoming a
Merman. Merman. Honoring the patriarch through elevated
cocktails, AltoRex.
Latin for "high king", AltoRex is roundaboutly named for
investor Beau King's legendary father Kim, who broke 13
school records while playing QB at GA Tech; the place is no
sports bar though, but rather an outdoor oasis atop Hotel
Palomar, offering city vistas via three separate enviros:
Earth, Air, and Fire (Wind's off pursuing a solo career).
The layout: step up an enclosed spiral staircase to "Air",
with white low-slung tables, pillow-strewn deck chairs, a
black marble fountain, and sweet West Peachtree views; walk
left to "Fire", dominated by an elevated copper fire pit
surrounded by stones, metal sculptures of burning twigs, and
half-circled by a cream couch; then keep walking to "Earth",
with white-tented cabanas, green & white cushioned couches,
and a crisscrossed floor of cement and faux grass, saving
them $15 a week in neighbor-kid mowing fees. The liquid
diet's highlighted by the Cafe ATL (shaken Ketel, Kahlua,
espresso), the Peach Julep (Bulleit, peach purée, mint), the
Ocean Breeze (Absolut Citron, chamomile citrus berry,
AperiTea, St. Germain), and the Belvedere Pomarancza/passion
fruit/pineapple/tawny port Forbidden Fruit -- too many, and
you'll find you've got problems with your snake.
Southern-inspired grub ranges from tuna tartare & avocado
tacos to braised pork belly sliders, all served in $5-$15
small bites that, though tasty, you'll look at with disgust
and say, "What is this? A dinner for ants?".
Valet is complimentary; make reservations and check out
downstairs resto Pacci at http://themove.thrillist.com/link.php?M=2181171&N=56284&C=25f0fb7663659a52572fbc99fe5fd818&L=38759
