Church History 101
by Eric Rauch

Church History 101

The history book of the New Testament, The Acts of the Apostles, is as brief as it is compelling. In his overview of the events that took place between Jesus’ ascension and Paul’s trial in Rome, Luke gives us a thrilling account of how the Church began. The apostles and the leaders of the early church were persecuted, marginalized, and put in prison, yet Luke tells us that they turned the first century world upside down (Acts 17:6). Although he certainly leaves many details and events out of his history, Luke leaves us with enough, such that when the book ends we want it to continue. The book of Acts should serve as a reminder and a lesson in how the Church should be teaching and writing its own history. And this lesson was not lost on Sidney M. Houghton, a history teacher from Wales and the author of Sketches From Church History.

He spends little time trying to connect every detail and historical personage in a succession of cause and effect like many Christian history volumes that have come before and since.

Having no delusions about writing a comprehensive and exhaustive tome on the subject, Houghton is actually freed to write about the high points (and low points) as he sees fit, and is beholden to no one in the process. What he leaves us with is a magnificent introduction to church history and a grand overview of the work that Christ is accomplishing, both through the trials and the triumphs of His precious Bride...
