Allium
A French Laundry vet's new San Juan resto
310 Main St; Eastsound, Orcas Island; 360.376.4904
When you hear the words "Orcas Island", you can't help but immediately think of, um, hmmmm...orcas? Wasn't that the wizard in He-Man? Magically giving you something to actually know about the San Juan destination, Allium.
Acclaimed Seoul/Munich/Paris trained chef Lisa Nakamura's providing a culinary reason to hit OI with seasonally-inspired, exotically flavored Frenchiness in this laid-back second-story eatery (which used to be pioneering locavore spot Christina's) featuring a polished-wood heavy 60-seat dining room arted with vegetable still lifes, and a laid-back deck with epic water views, all named for the phylum that includes the onion, but not the pear, or the J Lo. The constantly changing menu features signature entrees like Puget Sound sole filet w/ duchilly hazelnut faro; smoked paprika-braised pork shoulder w/ mango rhubarb salsa; and local saffron aioli'd Jones Family Farm manila clams that are good, but, unlike the Jim Jones Family Farm, not to die for. Bracketing the mains are apps (roasted local veggies w/ caramelized onions & goat cheese, curried prawns/Thai basil/crème fraiche English pea soup), and desserts like bread pudding soused w/ Soft Tail grappa and vanilla crème anglaise, which is French for vanilla cream...anglaise.
Because dinner is thirsty work, Allium's making infused iced and hot teas daily, plus they'll feature wines like a chateaunuef du pape, and a Willamette Valley Copper Hill pinot noir, plus signature 'tails with names like the Bond and the Fabutini --if your date drinks one, and still shuts you down, she must be the Princess of Sour.
As fun as ferry boat rides are, the full menu & reservation info is just a click away
