MLB: Florida 6, San Diego 3

SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- Mike Stanton and Dan Uggla homered Saturday, sparking the Florida Marlins to a 6-3 victory over San Diego.

Stanton's two-run blast in the second inning and Uggla's solo homer in the sixth made it 3-0 and Florida never trailed en route to its second win in a three-game weekend series at Petco Park.

Ricky Nolasco (12-7) hurled 8 1/3 solid innings, yielding three runs on five hits to win for the seventh time in eight starts.

Leo Nunez picked up his 26th save after getting the final two outs in the ninth.

Padres starter Kevin Correira (7-7) issued four walks and gave up four hits in six innings, allowing three runs.

Scott Hairston homered for San Diego, which saw its lead over San Francisco in the National League West dwindle to 1 1/2 games.

Couples catches Langer at Senior Open

SEATTLE (UPI) -- Fred Couples charged up the leaderboard with a 5-under-par 65 Saturday, catching Bernhard Langer after three rounds of the U.S. Senior Open.

Couples was the only player to avoid a bogey at the Sahalee Country Club in his home town of Seattle. He rode the fine performance to forge a first-place tie with second-round leader Langer (68) at 5-under 205.

Langer, coming off a win last week at the Senior British Open, barely hung onto a share of the lead by birdying the 18th hole. He is looking to become the first golfer since Tom Watson in 2003 to win back-to-back majors on the Champions Tour.

Chien Soon Lu registered a 2-under 68 and Tom Kite carded a 1-under 69 Saturday to claim third place at even-par 210.

Peter Senior (68) joined John Cook (72), Tommy Armour III (72) and Michael Allen (71) in a tie for fourth at 1-over 211.

Laraque goes from NHL to Green Party

MONTREAL (UPI) -- Former NHL player George Laraque is one of two new deputy leaders of Canada's Green Party, the environmental political party announced Saturday.

Laraque was named to a deputy post along with Adriane Carr.

Laraque, 33, known as one of the toughest players in the league during his 11 years with Montreal, Edmonton, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, made no bones about the fact he didn't like it when the Canadiens let him go in mid-season. But he told Postmedia News it turned out to be "the best thing that could have happened."

"I believe that everything happens for a reason," the hockey enforcer-turned-vegan environmental activist.

Laraque joined the Green Party, headed by Elizabeth May, in February. He said he doesn't expect to run for office any time soon but doesn't rule out the possibility some day. Instead, he says he will focus on issues that concern him, such as health and the environment.

"At the end of the day, all I want is for us to be all together to do what's best for the environment," he said.

May called him "committed and passionate" who represents "vitality and health."

"Georges is a not traditional politician and that's why he's my deputy leader," May said. "People who have decades of experience in politics are not exactly getting Canadians turned on to getting involved in elections."

Kyle Busch breezes to Iowa Speedway win

NEWTON, Iowa (UPI) -- Kyle Busch had little trouble winning Saturday's U.S. Cellular 250 Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway, dominating for 208 of its 250 laps.

Busch temporarily lost the lead after a late-race restart in which he took four tires while Kevin Harvick took only two and briefly grabbed the top spot.

But Busch charges through the crowd from seventh place, passed Harvick with 25 laps left and finished 2 seconds ahead, capturing his ninth Nationwide Series race of the year.

Jason Leffler ended up in third place, Brad Keselowski finished fourth and pole sitter Trevor Bayne claimed the fifth spot.

Keselowski's fourth-place finish enabled him to increased his points lead over Carl Edwards to 231. Edwards finished 10th Saturday.

MLS: Chivas USA 3, Columbus 1

CARSON, Calif. (UPI) -- Justin Braun and Blair Gavin scored first-half goals Saturday and Chivas USA rolled to a 3-1 victory over Columbus.

Braun racked up his seventh goal of the season in the 37th minute and Gavin scored shortly before halftime to give Chivas (5-9-3) its eighth point in four games following a six-game losing streak.

Carlos Borja added his first MLS goal in the 53rd minute to cap the Chivas victory.

A late goal from Steven Lenhart spoiled Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy's shutout bid.

Columbus (10-4-4) saw a modest two-game winning streak come to a halt.

Murray, Querrey go for Farmers title

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Defending champion Sam Querrey will go against top-seeded Andy Murray for a $112,000 paycheck Sunday in the Farmers Classic title match.

In the semifinals Saturday, Querrey, the second-seeded American, lost his first set to sixth-seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 (3-7) and had to fend off a match point in the 10th game of the second set before forcing a second tie-breaker. Tipsarevic went up 5-1 before Querrey answered with six straight points to take the middle set 7-6 (7-5).

The Serb refused to go quietly, however, taking a 3-1 lead in the deciding set before Querrey took control and forged a 6-4 win.

Murray, the world No. 4 Scotsman, had his own travails. After breezing to a 6-0 first-set win against fourth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, he dropped the second set 1-6. Murray bounced back 6-4 in the deciding set to earn a berth in the final.

A victory Sunday would make Querrey the first player to win this event two years in a row since Andre Agassi did it in 2001-2002.

Murray is going for his first title this year and 15th of his career.
