How long does your tweet last? 97% @replies, 92% Retweets Occur in First Hour! This is proved by the Sysomos study, which examined 1.2 billion tweets over 2 months.

Only 29% of all tweets produced a reply or a retweet. Of this, 19.3% were retweets and the rest replies.
92.4% of all retweets happen within the first hour of original tweet, 1.63% of retweets happen in second hour, and 0.94% in third hour. This means that if a tweet is not retweeted in the first hour, it is very likely that it will not be retweeted.
96.9% of @ replies happen within the first hour of original tweet, 0.88% of replies in second hour.

So if your tweet lives for such a short time span, you much choose the right time to tweet, when most of your followers are online and logged in to Twitter. Some people like to post the same tweet several times a day to catch different time zones and get more retweets.
