On the Bro'd
The Lite version of On the Road
The underlying themes of literature might be timeless, but you've got to refresh the context to keep people interested, like when they turned Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew into 10 Things I Hate About You, #1 being the fact that you liked that movie. Directing Kerouac off the road and into the fraternity parking lot, On the Bro'd.
Starting as an admittedly stupid pun, this Tumbler aims to transform every sentence of On The Road into modern dudespeak, a good fit given the Beat generation was also into booze, sex, drugs, and prattling endlessly about booze-sex-drugs. Stand-out excerpts include:
Edward Fortyhands, American Genius: And a kind of holy lightning I saw flashing from his alcohol tolerance and his love of partying, which he described so torrentially that buzzkills at Dave and Busters looked around to see the "overexcited douche."
Beasting it at Bally's: Carlo turned his Ed Hardy hat to the side and looked badass. Dean showed his sick bicep tat of a raven eating a hawk. I took a hardass picture that made me look like a f**king RoboCop who'd kill anybody for anything.
Wonderwall: One night while I was Bowflexing there was a knock on the door and there was Dean, grinning...and saying, "What up, you remember me— Dean Moriarty? I've come to ask you show me how to play "Wonderwall."
Unlike the original marathon writing of On the Road, the Bro version will be unrolling gradually over time -- though in an age of literature-free instant gratification, the #2 thing people hate is people who make them wait.
