Brand name beer shows recent gains

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Grocery store sales of three of the four largest U.S. beer brands have headed higher in recent weeks, counter to a recessionary trend, a research group said.

SymphonyIRI, which tracks grocery scanner data, said grocery store annual sales of Coors Light were up 1 percent as of Oct. 3, but sales of Miller Lite, Bud Light and Budweiser had dropped between 2 percent and 8 percent, The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

U.S. penalizes 6 firms $156.5M for bribes

HOUSTON (UPI) -- U.S. authorities said Thursday that a freight company and five gas and oil firms had agreed to $156.5 million in criminal fines related to bribery schemes.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice said charges were filed in federal court in Houston against Swiss freight forwarding company Panalpina World Transport Holding Ltd. alleging $27 million in bribes paid on behalf of its customers between 2002 and 2007.

WTO says protectionist measures in check

GENEVA, Switzerland (UPI) -- Group of 20 nations have largely held back from increasing protectionist policies since the summit meeting in Toronto, the World Trade Organization said.

World leaders met in Toronto in June. Since then, "by and large ... governments have continued to resist protectionist pressures," the WTO said in a report released Thursday.

Markets post solid gains

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. markets surged Thursday on encouraging data backed by a U.S. Federal Reserve decision to pump $600 billion into the economy through treasury bonds.

The Fed said Wednesday it would buy $75 billion in long-term bonds per month through June. The decision was made after reports earlier in the week showed gains in U.S. and Chinese manufacturing and in service-oriented U.S. business activity.
