Sports Update For Indiana Friday November 5, 2010 | | Baseball Giants decline option on Renteria SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants announced Thursday they have declined the 2011 contract option on World Series MVP Edgar Renteria. Renteria had seven hits, two of them homers, and six RBI during San Francisco's five-game triumph over the Texas Rangers. His three-run homer in the fifth game wrapped up the franchise's first World Series title in 56 years. He had been scheduled to make $10.5 million in the second year of a two-year contract he signed prior to the 2009 campaign. Instead, he will be paid a $500,000 buyout and become a free agent. Renteria played in 72 games during the regular season, the fewest in which he has appeared during a 15-year career with Florida, St. Louis, Boston, Detroit, Atlanta and San Francisco. He was slowed by a groin and hamstring injuries and went on the disabled list three times. He had three homers with 22 RBI while batting .276. Renteria is a five-time all-star with a career batting average of .287. Shin opened her round with four consecutive birdies and ended up with nine birdies and a pair of bogeys for her 65. Baba had a bogey at No. 12 -- one of the holes Shin bogeyed -- and eight birdies in her round. They are one stroke ahead of Morgan Pressel. Five golfers, including last week's LPGA tournament winner Choi Na-yeon, are tied for fourth at 5-under 67. Shin, despite the share of first, wasn't pleased with her overall result. "It looks great if you have a look at my score but there were a lot of shots and putts that I regret, so I am not satisfied with my golf," she said. She opened with four birdies and got to 6-under by adding birdies at Nos. 7 and 11. However, she had a bogey at the 12th hole and, after a birdie at 13, another bogey at 14. Back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16 got her to 7-under. Baba, playing in her home country, started her round with a birdie at No. 10 but the bogey at 12 got her back to even. She didn't have a misstep after that, getting birdies on three of her next four holes and four more on the front side. The Kings have won three straight and five of their last six. Mike Smith finished with 25 saves for the Lightning, who lost consecutive games for the first time this season and remained tied with Washington for first place in the Southeast Division with their third loss in four games. (UPI) -- Bobby Convey scored twice Thursday and the San Jose Earthquakes stunned New York 3-1 to earn a berth in the Major League Soccer semifinals. The Earthquakes outscored New York by an aggregate of 3-2 in the two-match series and will take on either Columbus or Colorado with a spot in the league's championship match on the line. New York was in excellent position after winning the first leg of the series 1-0 in California, but gave up a goal to Convey in the 6th minute Thursday. It remained a 1-0 contest deep into the second half and if things had remained the same through 90 minutes the teams would have gone into a 30-minute overtime and perhaps a penalty kick shootout to determine which would advance. Convey, however, touched off a flurry of late-game activity by scoring in the 76th minute. Juan Pablo Angel answered for New York a minute later and Chris Wondolowski produced the clinching San Jose goal in the 81st minute. Columbus will host Colorado Saturday in the second leg of their series. Colorado won at home last week 1-0. In the other two playoff series, Dallas will take a 2-1 lead against Real Salt Lake into their second leg Saturday and Los Angeles will own a 1-0 advantage against Seattle when they meet Sunday.
