Heavy snow blankets Britain, Ireland

LONDON (UPI) -- Northeast England and much of Scotland were under a severe weather advisory Saturday as inches of early snow continued to fall.

Forecasters said high wind and snow would continue through the weekend in the earliest that widespread snow storm to hit the British Isles in 17 years.

Soldiers join police in Brazil crackdown

RIO DE JANEIRO (UPI) -- Brazil's national government deployed 800 soldiers to help police purge Rio de Janeiro slums of drug gang members, the defense minister said.

At a news conference Saturday, Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said the troops would be backed by two helicopters and 10 armored vehicles, the BBC reported.

Irish march against government cuts

DUBLIN, Ireland (UPI) -- A trade union-led demonstration march wound through Dublin Saturday, as tens of thousands of people protested government cutbacks to ease federal debt.

David Begg, head of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, said the march "would be peaceful, good humored and very well stewarded," The Irish Times reported.

None hurt in Salvation Army store collapse

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (UPI) -- Part of the second floor of a Salvation Army store in Grand Junction, Colo., collapsed Friday without harming anyone, authorities said.

Emergency crews, fearing a patron had been trapped, searched through the debris late into the night before determining everyone had gotten out safely, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported.
