Beer Can Darl
Man with strange name makes awesome brew-art
There's no sweeter high school hobby than vintage beer-can collecting, upping your bedroom's awesomeness with, say, a 1970s Iron City depicting the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, or a 1970s Grain Belt too bummed out to depict the NFC Champion Minnesota Vikings. Taking that hobby and turning it into art, Beer Can Darl.
Darl's a crafty Dentonite who turns old-school cans into wall-mount mosaics by cutting, then flattening, then gluing the metal onto old-but-sturdy beer bottle crate sides, thus proving that one man's trashed is another's treasure. Among the alarmingly affordable pieces made so far:
Maps: Outlines of states (Texas with Shiner/ Pearl Light/ Texas Light/ Czhilispiel, New York with everything from Fort Schuyler to Jacob Ruppert), as well as the full continental US, including one w/ Hawaii and Alaska repped by Prinz Brau -- made for just three years in 1970s Anchorage, it's as ripe for a comeback as Prinz, Jr.
Quotes: Ransom note-style lettering for the likes of Ben Franklin's "Beer is proof that God loves us" and Queen Victoria's "Give my people plenty of beer...and you will have no revolution among them" -- apparently they hadn't figured out Dizzy Bat yet.
Other Shapes: A frothing mug with an "Mmm...Beer" caption; and the U.S. flag out of Michelob Light, Rainier, and Carling Black Label, a London-born brew that eventually became "America's Lusty, Lively Beer" -- so it fled persecution to live free, and, apparently, easy.
Prices depend on the rarity of the cans and time involved; because Darl likes a challenge, he also gladly accepts custom orders -- sure to make friends Mean Joe Greene with envy when they show up with nothing but a six-pack of Bud Grant.
In case you didn't know: the Vikes were the Bills of the '70s. Get your beer-can art at the online store.
