Sports Update For Indiana Friday November 26, 2010 | Baseball Victor Martinez joins Tigers DETROIT (UPI) -- Four-time all-star catcher Victor Martinez has agreed to a four-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, the team announced Friday. The switch-hitting Martinez played for the Boston Red Sox last season. The Boston Globe said this week the deal in Detroit would be worth $50 million. "We are thrilled to add a premier hitter like Victor Martinez to the Tigers organization," said Dave Dombrowski, the chief executive officer, president and general manager of the Detroit club. "Our top off-season priority was to add a proven bat in the middle of our lineup and Victor is an established .300 hitter and run-producer at the major league level." The 31-year-old Martinez hit .302 with 20 home runs and 79 RBI in 127 games with the Red Sox last season. He has batted .300, hit 131 homers and knocked in 638 runs in 1,004 games in the majors. Martinez played for more than seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians before going to Boston. "We expect Victor to be in our lineup on a daily basis, serving primarily as our club's designated hitter and catching two to three times a week," Dombrowski said. "He also has the ability to fill in at first base and his versatility allows us to keep a premier bat in our lineup every day." "He's done a good job this week and I'm excited about him playing against a team he's had a lot of familiarity with," Browns Coach Eric Mangini said Friday at the team's training camp in Berea, Ohio. Delhomme played seven seasons for Carolina. He joined the Browns this year, beginning as the starter before an ankle injury put him on the sidelines. Rookie Colt McCoy started the last five games for Cleveland. But McCoy also has an ankle injury and Delhomme takes over against Carolina. Fisher tied the Jumeirah Golf Estates course record with an 8-under-par 64 and went from a tie for 17th into first place. Poulter opened with four consecutive birdies en route to a 6-under 66. They are at 9-under 135 after 36 holes. Lee Westwood, who shot 5-under 67, is in third at 8-under and Paul Casey (67), Martin Kaymer (70) and Thongchai Jaidee (69) are tied for fourth two strokes behind the leaders. First-round leader Robert Karlsson fell back in to a tie for 12th with a 75, 10 strokes worse than his opening round. Fisher, who had 1-under 71 Thursday, opened his second round with back-to-back birdies and was 4-under after seven holes. He had consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-14 and tied the course record with a closing birdie. "The first day was kind of mediocre. Then, obviously today, I'm delighted with," Fisher said. "Every aspect was on fire. I drove it well, my irons were good and I hit a lot good, quality shots close to the hole." Poulter started the day with four straight birdies and earned his share of the lead with birdies at 15 and 17. To get Sturgis, 23, Toronto gave up its first-round pick in the 2011 MLS Super Draft. Sturgis "is a player who will be able to make an immediate impact in our team next season, but is also young enough to play a role here in the long term," said Earl Cochrane, Toronto FC interim director of soccer. "We studied the options that would likely be available to us with our first-round pick in the MLS Super Draft and made the decision that the addition of Nathan is of greater benefit to our squad." Sturgis has been in the league five years. He started with the Los Angeles Galaxy and has also played for Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Tennis Nadal advances in ATP Finals LONDON (UPI) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal won the last five games of his Friday match and secured a spot in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals. Nadal topped No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in completing a 3-0 run through the Group A round robin. Berdych is 1-2 but had a slim chance of advancing, needing a loss by third-seeded Novak Djokovic in a match against No. 8-seeded Andy Roddick later Friday. Second-seeded Roger Federer, like Nadal unbeaten this week, and No. 5 Andy Murray qualified Thursday for the semifinals from Group B. Friday's win marked the first match this week that Nadal didn't have to rally from a deficit. He faced only two break points -- both in the first set. Neither player earned a break in the first set but Nadal won the first three points of the tie-breaker and got to set point when Berdych had a double fault. Berdych has six double faults in the match. Nadal controlled the second set. He won on serve to go ahead 2-1 then took the final three points in a 14-point Berdych service game, setting off the five-game run to finish the match.
