Basketball

COL BKB: Connecticut 84, Kentucky 67

LAHAINA, Hawaii (UPI) -- Kemba Walker led an outstanding shooting effort Wednesday that brought Connecticut a surprising 84-67 victory over No. 9 Kentucky.

The Huskies claimed the championship of the Maui Invitational with back-to-back wins over No. 2 Michigan State and the Wildcats, who had won their first four games of the season.

Connecticut improved to 5-0, shooting 60 percent from the field and making 7-of-12 from 3-point range.

Walker scored 29 points, Alex Oriakhi had 18 and Niels Giffey added 14. The Huskies limited Kentucky to 37 percent from the field and outrebounded the physical Wildcats by one.

Connecticut stunned Kentucky by taking a 50-29 halftime lead and was not threatened over the final 20 minutes.

Boxing

Boxer Christy Martin shot, husband sought

ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Christy Martin, called the first superstar in women's boxing history, was recovering from gunshot and stab wounds Wednesday, Florida authorities said.

Orange County, Fla., sheriff's officials said they were seeking Martin's husband in connection with a Tuesday incident in which police said the injured ex-boxer flagged down a passing motorist for help, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said in a press release that Martin, 42, of Apopka, Fla., was taken by the motorist to Florida Hospital in Orlando where she was treated for several gunshot and stab wounds.

Authorities are now seeking her husband Jim, whom the newspaper said has acted as Martin's trainer and publicist for years.

Martin appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in April 1996 with the headline "The Lady Is a CHAMP" after signing with fight promoter Don King in the early 1990s.

She was a popular pay-per-view attraction and once boxed on an undercard for Mike Tyson, the Sentinel said.

Football

Portis out for the year

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins announced Wednesday they had placed running back Clinton Portis on injured reserve with a groin injury that requires surgery.

Portis, who needs 77 rushing yards to reach 10,000 for his career, has had a season cut short for the second straight year. He missed the last eight games in 2009 because of a concussion.

Washington Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday Portis, 29, would have surgery to repair his latest injury and the running back would have to refrain from all football activities for several months.

The season-ending groin injury occurred during Washington's game with Tennessee last Sunday. He had suffered a groin strain in Week 4 against Philadelphia.

He carried just 54 times in five games this season for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Hockey

NHL: San Jose 5, Chicago 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -- Jamal Mayers scored his first goal of the season Wednesday and Patrick Marleau had two late tallies to bring San Jose a 5-2 win over Chicago.

Mayers, among the league's Top 10 in penalty minutes, gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead early in the second period.

The Blackhawks twice closed their deficit to a goal, but Marleau ended any thoughts of a comeback by producing two scores over the final 6:13. He gave San Jose a 4-2 lead with a power-play tally and then scored into an empty net with 3 seconds to play.

San Jose halted a three-game losing streak and gave Marty Turco another tough outing. Turco allowed four goals on 30 shots after having given up seven goals to Calgary in his previous appearance last week.

Antti Niemi stopped 31-of-33 shots to get the win.
