On This Day 2003: Gov. George Ryan Clears Illinois Death Row

Dear Readers,

Our newsletter yesterday began by explaining how we don't compete with the headline services, but rather seek to provide historical context for today's events.

One subject we've written a fair bit about recently is the death penalty in the United States. While most publications focus on the work of the U.S. Supreme Court on this issue, we noticed, as we wrote in this article, that one state after another was either abandoning capital punishment or questioning its use of it.

The seminal event in this sequence of events came on January 11, 2003, when outgoing Illinois Governor George Ryan announced that he was commuting the sentences of 167 death row prisoners due to "the demon of error" in the capital punishment system.

Alice Paul was born to Hicksite Quaker parents on Jan. 11, 1885, in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. For most of her life, Alice Paul fought to obtain equal rights for women. She was a suffragist, a feminist and a political strategist. Committed to gender equality, she was one of the driving forces behind the Women's Rights Movement, helping author the Equal Rights Amendment.
