No Apple, Macword still draws crowds

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Macworld 2011 is on in San Francisco -- minus Apple -- but an anticipated attendance jump suggests Apple's non-presence isn't bothering anyone, organizers say.

Report on toy sales: Wind it up, sell it

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (UPI) -- U.S. retail researchers NPD Group said Friday strong toy sales in the fourth quarter pushed the sector to a 2 percent rise in the year compared to 2009.

Toy sales jumped 3 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the same quarter in 2009, pushing sales for the year to $21.87 billion. In 2009, $21.46 billion worth of toys were sold.

Close to half of the year's toy sales, $10.2 billion, occurred in the fourth quarter, the research group said. ...

FDIC charges banker with loan misconduct

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- Federal regulators said a former Nevada bank executive orchestrated loans that lost as much as $10 million at Silver State Bank before it failed.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. revealed charges Friday against former bank executive vice president and real estate manager Douglas French, who left the bank in May 2008, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

The bank with $1.8 billion in assets failed four months later.

Home Depot looking for women shoppers

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Home Depot is targeting its female customers by sprucing up departments offering home redecorating supplies and projects, the company says.

The company, acknowledging it has not always catered to women although they make up half its customers, hopes to attract them during what is the major selling season for home improvement stores, The New York Times reported Friday.
