Man gets jail term for anti-Semitic video

PERTH, Australia (UPI) -- An Australian man was sentenced to three years in jail for posting an anti-Semitic video on the Internet, officials said.

Brendon Lee O'Connell, 39, of Perth, was convicted under the state's racial vilification laws, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Monday.

O'Connell was found guilty of six offenses. He posted a video on YouTube showing him verbally abusing a young Jewish man in 2009.

Huge storm moves toward Australia

BRISBANE, Australia (UPI) -- A hurricane-force storm heading for Australia's Queensland coast could be its strongest ever and residents in some areas were told to evacuate, officials said.

Weather forecasters said the storm -- officially called Tropical Cyclone Yasi -- could have winds up to 150 mph when it crosses the coast Wednesday evening and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh warned residents to prepare for heavy rain and huge storm surges, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported...

Chirac may raise mental health as issue

PARIS (UPI) -- Defense lawyers were expected to raise health issues to try to delay a corruption trial for former French President Jacques Chirac, The Independent reported.

Chirac's defense team was expected to use a procedural hearing Monday to raise the possibility the former president may have Alzheimer's disease, raising doubts about his ability to be tried for corruption next month, the British publication said.

Myanmar Parliament opens

NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar (UPI) -- Myanmar's new military-led Parliament opened Monday, nearly three months after elections widely rejected as a sham by democracy supporters at home and abroad.

There was tight security as members of the two houses met in their new facility in the country's new capital, Naypyidaw, the Financial Times reported. The members were to elect speakers of both the houses before choosing a president and vice presidents, the report said.
