New development reshapes Mecca

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (UPI) -- New development in the holy Saudi Arabian city of Mecca that includes a super-size clock tower has upset some devout Muslims.

Mecca, where Mohammed is said to have proclaimed Islam, is off-limits to non-Muslims. 7-foot gingerbread man found in pieces

HAVERHILL, Mass. (UPI) -- Police in Haverhill, Mass., said they were searching for the vandal or vandals who stole and broke up a 7-foot-tall plywood Christmas gingerbread man

Police said the Christmas decoration was one of four created by Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High students and placed in Columbus Park for Haverhill's annual Christmas Stroll, the Boston Herald reported Friday.

IHOP drops acronym lawsuit

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The International House of Pancakes dropped a trademark-infringement lawsuit suit in Los Angeles against a Missouri-based church using the IHOP acronym.

Documents filed in federal court said the restaurant chain decided to drop its litigation Dec. 21 against the Kansas City-based International House of Prayer, which has California ministries in San Jose, Santa Maria and Dublin due to "ongoing mediation with the defendants," the Los Angeles Times reported Friday....

Revelers around world welcome 2011

NEW YORK (UPI) -- While revelers from Sydney to London and New York welcomed 2011 with fireworks, Pope Benedict XVI prayed Friday for those in poverty and suffering.
