COL BKB: Syracuse 70, Notre Dame 58

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (UPI) -- Kris Joseph scored 18 points and helped ignite a big second-half outburst Saturday that led No. 5 Syracuse to a 70-58 win over No. 15 Notre Dame.

Tyrone Nash's layup 6 minutes into the second half gave the Fighting Irish their last tie at 44-44. That's when the Orange went on a 19-3 run, bookended by Joseph baskets and highlighted by a Scoop Jardine 3-pointer to make it 58-47.

Jardine finished with 15 points and nine assists and Rick Jackson and James Southerland each added 12 points in the win, which gave Syracuse its third 15-0 start (2-0, Big East) under head Coach Jim Boeheim.

Rick Jackson and James Southerland each netted 12 points in the victory.

Tim Abromaitis led Notre Dame (12-2, 1-1) with 15 points.

Bills sign Merriman to 2-year contract

BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills said Saturday they have signed injured linebacker Shawne Merriman to a new contract.

The Bills didn't release the terms of the deal, but multiple media reports indicated it was for two years.

Merriman came to Buffalo after the Bills claimed him off waivers from San Diego in early November. He was idled due to calf and Achilles injuries after Oct. 10 and didn't play a down after he was obtained by the Bills.

The Chargers had placed the linebacker on injured reserve Oct. 13 with a minor-injury designation. For the season, Merriman, 26, collected just six tackles in three games.

Merriman racked up 231 tackles, 43 1/2 sacks and one interception with the Chargers in 60 games over six seasons.

NHL: Pens, Caps outdoor game rescheduled

PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- The National Hockey League postponed Saturday's outdoor game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals to Saturday night due to predicted rain.

The annual Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will face off at 8 p.m. EST at Heinz Field in order to avoid a steady rain expected to begin during the afternoon hours.

"There is a 95-percent chance that we're going to have a pretty steady rain at 1 o'clock," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told NHL.com. "With all of the different accommodations that have to be made, we felt like it would be better to minimize the inconvenience of the fans particularly; but also for all the other stakeholders in the game."

The game will be telecast at its new time on both NBC in the United States and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. CBC viewers in Toronto and Ottawa, however, will see the Saturday night clash between the Maple Leafs and Senators.

The time change will require some juggling of fans' schedules; however some of the participants in the game told NHL.com they felt better about playing a night game because it put them on their usual pre-game schedule.

America's Cup to boost San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- San Francisco officials say they expect the 2013 America's Cup regatta to fill the city's economic sails by more than $1 billion.

San Francisco was named the host city for the next America's Cup over Italy and Newport, R.I..

Mayor Gavin Newsome said the announcement marked "the beginning of an extraordinary chapter for our city and the sport of sailing."

The San Francisco Chronicle said Saturday the 2013 races would pit multihull boats designed for both light and strong winds.

The cup is currently held by Larry Ellison's Oracle Racing, which is sponsored by the San Francisco Yacht Club. Oracle won the historic trophy in Spain last winter and with it the right to name the venue for its defense.

Spurs seeking Beckham on 2-month loan

LONDON (UPI) -- Tottenham Hotspur Manager Harry Redknapp says he'd like to see Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham play for his club on a short-term loan.

Redknapp indicated Friday he's seeking the former England captain's services for his club on a two-month loan from Beckham's current club, the Los Angeles Galaxy, CNN reported.

The broadcaster said Beckham, 35, is once again believed to be interested in playing for a top-level European club in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the U.S. Major League Soccer season, which begins in March.

In each of the last two seasons, he has chosen to play on loan with Italian Serie A league leaders AC Milan.

This year, several British clubs are interested in signing Beckham to a short-term loan. CNN said the midfielder is favoring the Spurs because of the club's north London proximity to his British residence in Hertfordshire.

Nadal tops Federer in tennis exhibition

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal opened the 2011 men's tennis calendar Saturday with a straight-sets victory over Roger Federer in an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi.

Nadal prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) and retained his title at the invitational World Tennis Championships.

Federer had the top-ranked Nadal down 3-0 at the first tie-break; however Nadal was able to battle back with the help of some timely unforced errors on Federer's part, the BBC reported.

"I never lost my serve but I still lost the tournament, it's kind of tough," said Federer.

The match was the fourth time in the past five week that Federer and Nadal have squared off.
