| | Baseball Selig: No playoff, replay changes in 2011 PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (UPI) -- Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said Tuesday there will be no playoff format changes or expanded use of instant replays in the 2011 season.
Selig told MLB.com before a general managers' meeting in Arizona that it's too late to resolve the issues in time for the upcoming season.
The 2011 season has an early start -- March 31, the first time a baseball season will kick off before April since 2008 -- and Selig said the date is coming up too quickly to make such changes now.
But he added that discussion about the playoff format and more use of replay by umpires will be held at the meetings.
General managers had seemed to reach broad agreement in November that two more teams should be added to major league baseball's wild-card round. Still undecided, however, is the length of round and how it would be integrated into the post-season schedule.

| | Hockey NHL: Toronto 4, San Jose 2 SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -- Carl Gunnarsson scored the decisive goal in a three-goal third period Tuesday and Toronto San Jose 4-2 and give Coach Ron Wilson his 600th career victory
Carl Gunnarsson's goal on a tip-in at with 9:50 left in regulation broke a 2-2 tie and give the Maple Leafs their fifth win in six games. Clark MacArthur had two goals and Phil Kessel had one in support of James Reimer's 40 saves for Toronto.
Patrick Marleau scored both San Jose goals and Antti Niemi allowed three goals on 25 shots. The Sharks have lost five in a row.
Marleau gave San Jose a 1-0 lead with a first-period goal. The score held up until 3:27 of the third period when Kessel connected on a wrist shot to make it 1-1. MacArthur scored at 7:30 of the period to put Toronto ahead, but Marleau tied it just over a minute later.
Toronto took the lead on Gunnarsson's goal and added an insurance goal on MacArthur's empty-netter in the closing seconds.

| | Racing NASCAR drivers must choose among series DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- NASCAR has changed its rules to restrict drivers to competing for just one of its three national touring championships, driver Kenny Wallace said Tuesday.
Wallace told NASCAR.com that starting next year, drivers will be allowed to compete for only one title among the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series.
"The brand-new license forms that are out, there's a box and in it which states that you have to mark -- put an X -- what championship you're running for," he said of the 2011 NASCAR applications.
"A driver will only be permitted to earn driver championship points in one of the following three series: NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series," the application reportedly states. "Please select the series in which you would like to accumulate driver championship points. Choose one."
Drivers including Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards and Paul Menard competed last year in all Nationwide and Sprint Cup series races. Keselowski took the Nationwide title by 445 points over Edwards.

| | Soccer Irish soccer manager's daughter strangled PORT LOUIS, Mauritius (UPI) -- Police said they have three suspects in the strangulation of the daughter of prominent Irish soccer manager Mickey Harte, who was on her honeymoon in Mauritius.
The Irish Times reported the Department of Foreign Affairs said the three men were to appear in court Wednesday in the slaying of Michaela Harte, 27, at a hotel on the Indian Ocean island nation off the southeast coast of Africa.
Harte was found dead in her room at the Legends Hotel in the village of Grand Gaube by her husband John McAreavey, whom she married Dec. 30, the Times said.
She died as a result of neck compression, an autopsy confirmed, and the newspaper said local police had obtained enough evidence from their preliminary investigation to warrant charges.
Police Superintendent Yussuff Soopun said it was an obvious case of homicide and the killer had used an electronic pass card to enter the hotel room. Harte was with her husband having breakfast and said she was going back to their room to get some biscuits. When she didn't return, her husband went to check on her and found her dead, police said.
Police suspect she interrupted a burglary. Soopun said her husband was not a suspect.
Harte's father is manager of the Tyrone Gaelic soccer team and a writer for The Irish Times. The elder Harte described his daughter in a statement as "a lovely girl, a wonderful daughter" and a "gem."

| | Tennis Schedule rained out at Hobart tournament HOBART, Australia (UPI) -- Rain washed away the entire schedule Wednesday at the Hobart International women's tennis tournament in Australia.
Storms led to some matches being suspended Tuesday but even with that backup and the loss of play Wednesday, tournament organizers said they are confident the event can wrap up as scheduled Saturday.
"There are a number of options that will be considered to ensure the tournament is completed on time," tournament director Michael Roberts said.
"Matches can begin earlier than originally scheduled and, with clearer skies expected this weekend, we may also play the semifinals and final on the same day -- with a suitable rest between matches, of course."
Roberts said matches could be scheduled for all three match courts of the Domain Tennis Center to help catch up on the schedule.
The current schedule has top-seeded Marion Bartoli playing twice Thursday, meeting Elena Vesnina in an afternoon second-round match and then, if she wins, going against either fifth-seeded Klara Zakopalova or Alberta Brianti in the evening session.
No. 4-seeded Roberta Vinci needs to finish a match against Elena Baltacha suspended Tuesday before the survivor of that match is to play sixth-seeded Jarmila Groth in an afternoon quarterfinal.
